Russian Sign Language

Russian Sign Language is a deaf sign language based on Russian. It originated in 1806 and is taught in schools from 1878.

Russian sign language is related to Austrian and French sign languages, but different. There are deaf associations and athletic clubs. Signed interpretation required in court, and used at important public events. There are many sign language classes for hearing people, elementary schools for deaf children since 1878, and organizations for sign language teachers. There is also a manual system for spelling, dictionary, films, TV, videos.

In Russian Sign Language, finger spelling is used for the following types of words:
- Proper nouns (names, cities, titles, brand names, etc)
- Foreign borrowings.
- Scientific terms.
- Short conjunctions, prepositions, interjections, modal particles, etc., e.g. v-in, nu-well, da-yes, by-would.
- Words lacking a sign representation.
